About Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is for the treatment of spider and varicose veins primarily on the legs. Dr. Johnson uses a very small needle to inject a sclerosing solution into the targeted veins. The sclerosing solution irritates the tiny vessel and makes it collapse and disappear. Sclerotherapy is for the superficial, cosmetically displeasing vessels, not for large, deep ropey veins that should be treated by surgery.

At Steele Dermatology, we have some of the most experienced and skilled sclerotherapy consultants who will create a custom treatment plan for you at your free consultation. Schedule an appointment with Steele Dermatology online or give us a call at (770) 464-6000.

Schedule

  • Dr. Johnson will have you lie down on the treatment table such that you’re comfortable and the tiny veins are exposed. She will then identify the veins and use a tiny gauge needle to insert into each visible vein and flush the vein with the solution. The solution that Dr. Johnson is pH balanced so it doesn’t burn. Most patients barely notice the pricks of the needle. The treated areas are bandaged then you put on your compression stockings to help seal the vessels closed.

  • Mostly, recovery includes wearing compression hose (or at least socks) for 2 weeks after treatment to make sure the veins are sealed close. Otherwise, you can return to normal activities immediately after treatment. Avoid vigorous exercise for 1 week.

  • You will likely need additional treatment in the future. People develop varicose veins because of genetics, previous pregnancy, and standing on one’s feet for extended periods of time. So, over time you will likely create more varicose and spider veins. You may need additional treatment in 1-2 years, depending on the severity of the disease.
