About chemical peels
Chemical peels are a general category of therapeutic treatments that use an application of acids or other solutions to treat skin conditions. The specific peel solution will determine what type of results you get, i.e. a peel solution to correct discoloration, treat acne, or smooth skin texture.
Most (but not all) chemical peels cause a superficial layer of skin to peel away. Discoloration, dull surface skin cells, and irregular textured cells peel away in this process. We choose the appropriate strength of chemical peel depending on the level of treatment your condition requires.
Chemical peels can include ingredients such as salicylic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid, hydroquinone, and others of varying strengths. All together, chemical peels can range from mild with minimal peeling over 1-2 days to aggressive with peeling for more than a week. We offer a wide selection of peels to ensure that we have options that are both safe and effective for every skin type and color.
Dr. Johnson and our estheticians will review treatment options for you to choose what will work best for your skin goals and lifestyle. Schedule an appointment with Steele Dermatology online or give us a call at (770) 464-6000.
A customized solution will be applied to your skin in the clinic, and in most cases, will be left on the skin for the remainder of the day. There may be slight stinging during the process but subsides quickly. 24-48 hours after, the skin may begin to flake and lift, revealing a layer of fresh skin. Some peels work on a cellular level, and may not produce any peeling, while others can go very deep, and produce a ‘sheeting’ effect for several days. Most peels are best done in a series for best results.
Your skin may begin to feel dry after the first day, then slowly begin to flake and peel. You may experience only a ‘lacy’ texture to the skin, or you may experience heavy peeling for several days. You will be given a post-procedure kit to help support your skin during this time, along with specific follow-up instructions. May return to normal activities immediately. Makeup applications may be difficult during peak peeling days.
We always recommend a series of peels for the best results. While some stronger peels only require 1-3 treatments, most patients see the best improvement with 6-12 treatments.
